Hope for the Polar Bear?
Climate change is destroying vital polar bear habitat, putting the species at risk of extinction, the U.S. government said today as it listed the polar bear as threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the world’s largest conservation organization, said the government’s decision clearly indicates that climate change impacts are already threatening the survivability of animals and habitats, and illustrates the urgency of preparing for and adapting to a rapidly changing climate.

Fainting Goats
Fainting goats?" you ask. "This must be a joke!"
"No," I reply, "they are definitely real." Fainting goats are a slightly smaller version of the standard goat, who, believe it or not, thanks to a genetic condition called myotonia congenita, actually seem to faint when they are startled.

Kitten Mania :)
Kittens (Old English diminutive of cat) are young domesticated cats (Felis silvestris catus) that are not fully-grown.[1]
A litter of kittens usually consists of two to five kittens. They are born after a gestation that lasts between 64-67 days, with an average length of 66 days.[2] Kittens emerge in a sac called the amnion which is bitten off and eaten by the mother cat.[3] For the first several weeks, kittens are unable to urinate or defecate without being stimulated by their mother. They are also unable to regulate their body temperature for the first three weeks, so kittens born in temperatures less than 27 °C (80 °F) can die from exposure if they are not kept warm by their mother. The mother's milk is very important for the kittens' nutrition and proper growth; so if possible, the kitten should not be taken from their mother for at least 5 to 6 weeks after birth. This milk transfers antibodies to the kittens, which helps protect them against infectious disease.[4] Newborn kittens are also unable to produce concentrated urine, so have a very high requirement for fluids.[5

- Agility is a sport that appeals to young people and to senior citizens. It has great spectator appeal. Agility is designed to demonstrate a dog's willingness to work with its handler in a variety of situations. It is an athletic event that requires conditioning, concentration, training and teamwork. Dog and handlers negotiate an obstacle course racing against the clock.
- The AKC offers two types of agility classes. The first, Standard Class, includes contact objects such as the dog walk, the A-frame, and seesaw. Each of the contact obstacles has a "safety zone" painted on the object and the dog must place at least one paw in that area to complete the obstacle. The second is Jumpers with Weaves. It has only jumps, tunnels and weaves poles with no contact objects to slow the pace.

Welsh Terrier
General AppearanceThe Welsh Terrier is a sturdy, compact, rugged dog of medium size with a coarse wire-textured coat. The legs, under body and head are tan; the jacket black (or occasionally grizzle). The tail is docked to length meant to complete the image of a "square dog" approximately as high as he is long. The movement is a terrier trot typical of the long-legged terrier. It is effortless, with good reach and drive. The Welsh Terrier is friendly, outgoing to people and other dogs, showing spirit and courage. The "Welsh Terrier expression" comes from the set, color, and position of the eyes combined with the use of the ears.

We're going to the Dogs, A Special Issue
This week we're going to the Dogs with a special Dog issue of Animals in the News.
Many Dogs come from Puppy mills, Yorkies one of the most popular.
What is a Puppy Mill?
"Puppy Mills", also known as "commercial breeders" in the eyes of the government, breed thousands of puppies a year for sale to pet shops across the country.
In a world of "pregnancy for profit," most of these dogs are forced to live their entire, sometimes very short lives, in dark warehouses . . . in tiny, crowded, and indescribably filthy conditions. Females are bred continuously until they die.
Between pregnancies, hundreds of dogs compete for attention and food - their bony bodies a testament to inadequate food and water, substandard housing, insufficient exercise and infrequent, if any, veterinary care. Puppies are taken away from their mothers as young as four weeks of age, packed several to a crate, with little food, water, or ventilation and transported to pet stores across the country.
Many times the puppies arrive at the pet stores malnourished or ill; some never make it at all. The people who buy these puppies think they are taking home a healthy, well adjusted companion animal. But sadly, many times they discover they have purchased a dog that has a personality problem, disease, or genetic defect - caused by over breeding, inbreeding, or the unsanitary, squalid conditions at the puppy mill.
Several puppy mill/commercial breeder facilities that are not the filthy norm. The dogs live in fairly clean areas, kennel runs and some even in the house. This does not sound like a typical mill now does it? It is though. It is, because these dogs are bred every time they come into season without doing any genetic testing and they are not even necessarily bred to the same breed.
These dogs may not live several crammed into a wire rabbit cage, may get groomed or may even sleep on someones bed doesn't change the fact that they are bred every single season until their little bodies are failing.
Bottom line...a puppy mill, or, to be politically correct, commercial breeder, is in business to crank out as many puppies as they can to sell to pet stores, flea markets, on the side of the road, individual ads in the paper and now through Internet classified ads.

WHEN CATS ATTACK"A special issue - Week 10
Today's Topic is all about Cats, your teacher up above is Miss Aloha, A pretty orange kitten sporting some killer shades.
Some words from Aloha herself" Why do this 2-legged animals have to dress me up, They need to remember I am smarter then them I will defeat them someday. Muahhahahahaha!"
Note: This is a Joke and was not meant to be mean.
Cat Facts:
All cats are members of the family Felidea. Interestingly enough, the cat family split from the other mammals at least 40,000,000 years ago, making them one of the oldest mammalian families. All cats share certain characteristics that are unique to the cat family.
Cats are pure carnivores. They need a high level of protein in their diets - around 30% - and lack the digestive equipment to do well on a diet of grains, fruits or vegetables. In fact, if you were to design a creature to live from hunting mammals you would have trouble doing better than the design of the cat. If you know cats at all, you know that they have powerful jaws, long, sharp teeth, and claws that draw back into their paws when not in use. Cats hear extremely well. Their eyes are adapted for vision in dim light for hunting just before dawn and just after dusk, the prime hunting periods.

"Breed Spotlight"
Great Dane
Great Dane Puppy
The Great Dane combines, in its regal appearance, dignity, strength and elegance with great size and a powerful, well-formed, smoothly muscled body. It is one of the giant working breeds, but is unique in that its general conformation must be so well balanced that it never appears clumsy, and shall move with a long reach and powerful drive. It is always a unit-the Apollo of dogs. A Great Dane must be spirited, courageous, never timid; always friendly and dependable. This physical and mental combination is the characteristic which gives the Great Dane the majesty possessed by no other breed. It is particularly true of this breed that there is an impression of great masculinity in dogs, as compared to an impression of femininity in bitches. Lack of true Dane breed type, as defined in this standard, is a serious fault.

ABOUT: Pet allergies
More than 70% of U.S. households have a dog or cat. Pets provide companionship, security and a sense of comfort. However, people with allergies should be cautious in deciding what type of pet they can safely bring into their home.
For an estimated 10% of the entire population that can be allergic to animals, it is important to know what exactly causes their allergies, where these 'triggers' can be encountered, and what to do to minimize exposure.

Survivor Stories:
Abby was purchased in Michigan after her owner answered a classified ad for AKC-registered Labrador Retrievers. Her owner was given only a handwritten vaccination record at purchase.
Within a few days, Abby became gravely ill and tested positive for Parvovirus. She also had a severe urinary infection, ear infection and roundworms. The veterinarian felt she had only a 30 percent chance of recovery.
After several days of intensive care hospitalization, Abby beat the odds and survived Parvo. Her family sued her breeder in small claims court. He continues to sell AKC-registered dogs through the classified ads.
Pepper was born in a puppy mill in Arkansas and was sold by a Missouri-based broker that supplies puppies to pet stores nationwide to a pet store in California.
Within hours of purchase, Pepper showed signs of neurological problems. He was diagnosed with an incurable, hereditary brain disorder. As he ages, Pepper has progressively longer "spells" during which he cannot walk, eat or stand on his own.

Black Cats considered unlucky?
One thing for sure is that Black cats are not unlucky, Most Black cats stay at shelters longer than Orange, Brown, Etc. So why people think they are so unlucky is a question unsolved. Is it there yellow eyes?
Puppy Buying Tips:
1. Find a responsible breeder and visit their premises. Responsible breeders provide a loving and healthy environment for their canine companions, but don't take their word for it. Never buy a puppy without seeing where they and their parents are raised and housed with your own eyes.
2. Don’t be fooled by common claims made by pet stores when pushing their puppies. Despite what they may tell you, pet stores do sell puppy mill puppies.
3. Don't be swayed by a great website or ad. Just because a website says great things about their “home raised” or “family raised” puppies doesn’t make it true. Many puppy millers pose as small family breeders online and in newspaper and magazine ads.
4. Consider adoption. Adopting a dog instead of buying one is the surest way to strike a blow against puppy mills. To find the perfect match, you'll want to choose the right one for you and your lifestyle. Animal shelters have dozens of dogs, many of them purebreds, just waiting for homes. There are also breed specific rescue groups for every breed of dog, including “designer” or “hybrids” like Labradoodles and Puggles. Mixed-breed dogs also make wonderful pets.
5. Avoid the temptation to "rescue" a puppy mill puppy by buying him. Even though your intentions may be good, don’t buy a puppy with the idea that you are “rescuing” him or her. Your “rescue” opens up space for another poor puppy mill puppy and puts money into the pockets of the puppy mill. Pet stores won’t leave their cages empty and websites won’t leave their pages blank. The money you spend on your puppy goes right back to the puppy mill operator and ensures they can continue breeding and treating dogs inhumanely. If you see someone keeping puppies in poor conditions, alert your local animal control authorities instead of buying.

Animal Advocates Celebrate Historic Milestone: Dogfighting Now a Felony in All 50 States:
March 5, 2008
Today marks the beginning of a new era for dogs, a moment to savor for millions of Americans who cherish the special place these wonderful animals occupy in our lives, and a signpost of progress for all citizens who share aspirations for a more humane America. Wyoming Gov. Dave Freudenthal signed a bill yesterday that made the cruel blood sport of dogfighting a felony crime ? the 50th state to enact such a law.
"This is a real reason to celebrate ? a landmark moment in the struggle to rid our nation of this hideously cruel activity that destroys so many innocent animals and is so corrosive to the ideals of a decent and civil society," said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States.
Wyoming's action follows the signing of a similar felony law in Idaho on Feb. 25.
These two states were among many states nationwide that are considering legislation this year to increase penalties against dogfighting. Such bills are pending in 23 states.
The wave of legislative action this year follows the 2007 case against football star Michael Vick, who pleaded guilty to federal dogfighting charges. His case shed a spotlight upon the horrific reality of dogfighting in the U.S. and triggered a national outcry. Vick is serving time in a federal prison.
Since its inception in 1954, The HSUS has worked to rid the nation of animal fighting. As recently as 1975, dogfighting was a misdemeanor crime in all states. By 1995, the number of states with misdemeanor penalties for dogfighting was down to 16. Now that number is zero.

The American Pit Bull Terrier is feared by many because of Dog fighting when in reality they are great dogs and I know other people will agree. Its sad to see little kids that grow up with parents saying" Pit bulls are mean".
Please give it in your heart to give Bully Breeds a chance. Many of Pit bulls are in animal shelters while other shelters will not take them because they think they are mean.
